Car Loan Guide: Getting a Fair Deal on Your Auto Finance

Buying a car on finance is convenient, but it is easy to focus on the monthly instalment and lose sight of the total price. A car also loses value from the day you drive it home, which makes the cost of borrowing even more important. This calculator shows both your EMI and the true cost of the car once interest and fees are added.

What goes into a car loan EMI

The amount you borrow is the on-road price minus your down payment and any trade-in value for your old vehicle. The EMI is then calculated on that balance using the interest rate and tenure you choose. A processing fee, if your lender charges one, is shown separately because it is usually paid upfront or deducted from the loan.

How long should a car loan be?

Lenders commonly offer car loans from one to seven years. Longer tenures shrink the EMI, but they come with two risks. First, you pay interest for longer. Second, the car may be worth less than the loan balance for a large part of the term, which is a problem if you want to sell or if the car is written off. Many buyers aim for a tenure of three to five years as a balance between affordability and cost.

New car vs used car loans

Used car loans often carry a higher interest rate and a shorter maximum tenure, because the vehicle is older and harder to value. Run both scenarios here: a lower price with a higher rate can sometimes cost more in interest than you'd expect, and a slightly larger down payment can balance it out.

Ways to lower your car loan cost

  • Put down more upfront. Even an extra 10% reduces both EMI and total interest.
  • Negotiate the rate and the fee, not just the car price. Dealer finance and bank finance can differ.
  • Watch for add-ons such as extended warranties or insurance bundled into the loan, which increase the amount you pay interest on.
  • Keep the tenure short if the EMI still fits comfortably in your budget.

Remember that running costs such as fuel, insurance, servicing and parking come on top of the EMI. Budget for them before choosing the car.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a car loan EMI calculated?

The loan amount (car price minus down payment and trade-in) is repaid with the standard reducing-balance EMI formula using your monthly interest rate and number of months.

Is the processing fee included in the EMI?

No. The calculator shows it separately because most lenders collect it upfront or deduct it from the disbursed amount. It is included in the true cost of the car.

What is a good tenure for a car loan?

Three to five years is a common balance. Longer tenures lower the EMI but increase interest and the risk of owing more than the car is worth.

Should I take dealer finance or a bank loan?

Compare both using the same amount and tenure. Look at the interest rate, processing fee and any bundled insurance before deciding.
